In a turnaround, the Two Gymnopedies was composed by Erik Satie and this time orchestrated by Claude Debussy. It is noted for unusual harmonic progressions. Named for an ancient Spartan festival honoring the gods, these short, ethereal pieces were originally written for piano. Dmitri Shostakovich s Symphony No. 9 was intended to an epic affair to celebrate Russia s wartime victory. Instead it was right-sized for our finale of the season with thrilling, brilliant and frenzied final measures.
